Gunther Deix was born in Czechoslovakia 1945. Gunther arrived in Australia 1968. Below is a review by Katrina Hodgkinson that personifies Gunther and his art. Click on this link for a list of exhibits, contributions and collections.
Deix' lack of formal art education allows him the expression of individual vision without the inhibitions that often develop as a side‑effect of institutional training. Deix' work in this exhibition uses the landscape as an inspirational source for his changeable styles. Each exhibit has a representation of a thought, feeling, or subconscious archetype and one can easily relate to each of the titles when seen. It may take a short while to move away from each creation, however. The longer one peruses the picture, the more one reads into it. This is not the intention of the artist, however it is the result one receives as the viewer, or, in this case, appreciator. Deix is a powerful artist, and his works cannot but help elicit an emotional response. Observing works like "The Crossing" (Pen & Ink Drawing, $1,200 leaves one in total awe. His true ability lies in his creativity. All his paintings contain a message, because he goes straight to the heart of the matter. Because he uses his instinct and his heart to create, the material he finds is so overwhelmingly strong, that he is compelled to give it expression. Deix creates mainly during the early evening and at night when his expression and intuition can work uninterrupted by the daily noise of life. He lives in serenity in Captains Flat, NSW, and has such total dedication to his art he relates it to a kind of obsession. Deix' form of art reveals a world hidden deep beneath the superficial surface of the individual. He refuses any annexation, because he doesn't know what will come out when he sets pen to paper. This followed on from his earlier attempts at expression ‑he attempted poetry and short stories which he eventually dismissed, due mainly to his appalling spelling. He was ultimately stimulated by a Norman Lindsay reproduction in a newspaper. His then wife and two children encouraged his newfound profession, however his wife could not support the hours Gunther Deix poured into his art and ultimately left him to raise the children, "The Removalist" (Pen & Ink, $5001). Now that his sons have left, Gunther supports himself entirely with the proceeds of his art. Deix is overtly eccentric. He is the true bohemian ‑ unabashed about living, breathing and wearing his art and its philosophy which he has fine‑tuned into a strongly individualistic and introspective device. The attention to detail in both his bush imagery and his people is what initially captures the eye, but what encapsulates and entrances the soul is its sensuality. His natural affinity for the land gives his art an aboriginality which his choice of technique accentuates. He sees an intimate relationship between the human body and the earth. Sensuous shapes emerge from the bush then succumb to it. His art is so personal, that one feels a sensation of treading on sacred ground. It has taken a long time, but today Gunther Deix' paintings and drawings are hung in Galleries and at Exhibitions around' the world. The Sheep's Back Gallery, Bowral, is proud to exhibit Deix for Spring 1993. |
